What is the difference between 'affect' and 'effect'?
'Affect' is primarily a verb meaning 'to influence,' while 'effect' is primarily a noun meaning 'a result' or 'consequence.' 'Effect' can also be a verb meaning 'to bring about.'
What is a gerund?
A gerund is a verb form ending in '-ing' that functions as a noun. For example, 'Swimming is my favorite exercise.'
What is the function of a semicolon?
A semicolon is used to connect two independent clauses that are closely related in thought. It can also be used to separate items in a list if those items already contain commas.
Explain the difference between 'lie' and 'lay'.
'Lie' (intransitive) means to recline or rest. Its principal parts are lie, lay, lain. 'Lay' (transitive) means to put or place something. Its principal parts are lay, laid, laid.
What is a dangling modifier?
A dangling modifier is a word, phrase, or clause that is intended to modify a word but does not clearly modify any word in the sentence. Often, the subject of the modifier is missing.
What is the subjunctive mood?
The subjunctive mood expresses a wish, a hypothetical situation, a condition contrary to fact, or a command/request after verbs like 'suggest,' 'demand,' or 'require'.
