What is the definition of a prime number?
A prime number is a natural number greater than 1 that has no positive divisors other than 1 and itself.
Explain the concept of 'order of operations' in mathematics.
The order of operations, often remembered by the acronym PEMDAS/BODMAS, dictates the sequence in which mathematical operations should be performed: Parentheses/Brackets, Exponents/Orders, Multiplication and Division (from left to right), Addition and Subtraction (from left to right).
What is a variable in algebra?
A variable is a symbol, usually a letter, that represents an unknown or changing quantity in a mathematical expression or equation.
Define 'coefficient' in the context of an algebraic term.
A coefficient is a numerical or constant quantity placed before and multiplying the variable in an algebraic term.
What is the difference between an integer and a rational number?
An integer is a whole number (positive, negative, or zero), while a rational number is any number that can be expressed as a fraction p/q, where p and q are integers and q is not zero. All integers are rational numbers.
Explain the Pythagorean theorem.
The Pythagorean theorem states that in a right-angled triangle, the square of the hypotenuse (the side opposite the right angle) is equal to the sum of the squares of the other two sides (legs). Mathematically, a² + b² = c².
